Actually, the name notwithstanding, it has absolutely nothing to do with ripping CDs.  

RIPCD = Rivendell Inter Process Communication Daemon.  

Its primary job is to maintain the "security context" --i.e. which RD user is currently "logged in".  It also acts as the proxy for other Rivendell modules when accessing system-wide resources --e.g. UDP ports 5858 and 5859 when processing RMLs.
